Little Donkey + Hero Montgomery

Little Donkey and HERO Doughnuts & Buns bring a new dining destination to downtown Montgomery, set within the district that Equal Justice Initiative has shaped around the Legacy Museum and its memorial and plazas. As those sites began drawing visitors from across the country, the surrounding blocks needed more places to eat. Equal Justice Initiative partnered with the Pihakis Restaurant Group to bring food and gathering spaces near its sites. The two restaurants turn a once-vacant corner into a lively gathering place for the visitors and locals the area now draws.

The site sits across from Equal Justice Initiative's developments and a short walk from Legacy Plaza, anchoring the corner where the public life of the block is strongest. Where a bare parking lot once stood, both restaurants now front a layered streetscape shaped by sun, shade, and the site's natural slope. HERO brings a casual, daytime energy to the corner, while Little Donkey opens onto a generous front porch with operable doors and bar windows, where retractable screens lower in the evening to soften the western sun. Below, a sunken covered dining area nestles into the slope, screened from the parking by landscaping.

A shaded north courtyard planted with ginkgo trees offers a quieter retreat that can be reserved for private gatherings, and an ipe bench wraps the corner as a place to wait and meet. Each restaurant pairs indoor dining with covered outdoor seating, whether you are settling in for a meal at Little Donkey or grabbing doughnuts at HERO.

The exterior is clad in a handmade thin masonry that references historic downtown character with a fresh, contemporary interpretation, paired with exposed steel. Inside HERO, playful casework and colorful tile add personality, while a custom wood storefront wraps Little Donkey's tortilla kitchen.

Little Donkey and HERO bring lasting energy to a block that had long gone quiet, placing dining at the heart of downtown Montgomery and giving locals and visitors a place to gather.
